The history of Republic Day is intertwined with India's struggle for independence from British rule. After more than 200 years of British colonial rule, India gained its independence on August 14, 1947. However, the true establishment of India as a sovereign state occurred on January 26, 1950, when the Indian Constitution came into effect, officially declaring the country as a republic.

Republic Day holds significance not only for marking India's status as a sovereign nation but also for honouring the right of Indian citizens to elect a democratically-run government. On Republic Day, January 26, 1950, India's constitution was officially enacted, marking a significant milestone in the country's history. This date was deliberately chosen as it coincided with the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day, observed on January 26, 1930. The constitution bestowed upon the citizens of India the authority to self-govern by electing their government. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the inaugural president at the Durbar Hall in the Government House. Following the oath-taking ceremony, a ceremonial drive took place along a designated route to the Irwin Stadium, where he unfurled India's national flag. Since that historic day, January 26 has been commemorated with joyous celebrations and a strong sense of patriotism throughout the nation.
A lot of work goes into making Republic Day celebrations special in India. There are big military parades in cities like New Delhi, with soldiers from the army, navy, and air force, as well as traditional dancers. In New Delhi, the Prime Minister starts things off by honouring soldiers at India Gate. The President watches the parade, and in other cities, state governors do the same. A special guest, often a leader from another country, joins the President.
During the celebrations, brave soldiers and even regular people get awards for their courage. Helicopters drop rose petals from the sky, and there is a parade with school kids dancing and singing patriotic songs. The Air Force ends the parade with fighter planes making colourful patterns in the sky.
Republic Day also includes cultural events all over the country, focusing on India's history and traditions. Kids are an important part of these events and often get treats or small gifts. Additionally, there's a special rally by the Prime Minister and a folk dance festival that happens every year from January 24 to 29.
