On Republic Day, January 26, 1950, India's constitution was officially enacted, marking a significant milestone in the country's history. This date was deliberately chosen as it coincided with the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day, observed on January 26, 1930. The constitution bestowed upon the citizens of India the authority to self-govern by electing their government. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the inaugural president at the Durbar Hall in the Government House. Following the oath-taking ceremony, a ceremonial drive took place along a designated route to the Irwin Stadium, where he unfurled India's national flag. Since that historic day, January 26 has been commemorated with joyous celebrations and a strong sense of patriotism throughout the nation.
A lot of work goes into making Republic Day celebrations special in India. There are big military parades in cities like New Delhi, with soldiers from the army, navy, and air force, as well as traditional dancers. In New Delhi, the Prime Minister starts things off by honouring soldiers at India Gate. The President watches the parade, and in other cities, state governors do the same. A special guest, often a leader from another country, joins the President.
