Wed, Feb 09 2022 Why MPhil programme is losing its sheen

The end of the road for MPhil programmes at the University of Delhi marks a clear break from the past and the beginning of a new line of thinking. The decision for discontinuing the MPhil programme at DU from the 2022-2023 academic year was notified on January 27 in line with NEP 2020. And it was confirmed by Vikas Gupta, registrar, DU, indicating that its implementation is pending.

Vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh said that the MPhil programme has become redundant over time, as it is not a course that finds its place across all disciplines. Further, the UGC’s decision to make PhD mandatory for the recruitment of teaching faculty with an extension of 2 years implies the MPhil has less meaning. The 4- year UG programme prepares students to apply directly for the PhD programmes that need another 3-5 years of completion.
