On the basis of the data, nearly 5, 484 seats remained vacant in the IITs in 2020-2021. Out of these, 476 seats were vacant in UG courses, 3229 seats in PG courses, and 1779 in PhD courses. In December 2021, a CAG report also highlighted the issues of seats remaining in eight new IITs at Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, Patna, and Ropar.
A total of 10, 780 seats remained vacant across various courses in the country’s Indian institutes of technology in the last 2 academic sessions, the center informed parliament on Wednesday.
According to the statement of the ministry, the seats stayed vacant despite special rounds of admissions. The premier engineering colleges like IITs, NITs, and IIITs impart education and research in science and technology subjects and are characterized as institutes of National importance. Admission to various research programmes in these institutions is strictly offered only to eligible candidates on the basis of the ranking and other parameters, who fulfill the required eligibility criteria.

On the basis of the report, 28% of seats were available across IITs in PG courses during 2014-2019. And there is a large number of PhD seats available.
